Power Nap Benefits
Short term memory
When done properly, a power nap benefits your energy and let you regenerate efficiently. NASA studies have proved that this brain function improves dramatically when taking a nap. Short term memory or working memory is a key cognitive skill when performing any kind of complex action.
Motor performance
Our brain needs to rest learn. This is true for knowledge and for motor skill learning. Sarah Mednick, Ph. D and her colleagues at Harvard University have shown that a nap can be as good as a night sleep when learning new coordination skills. This might explain why Lance Armstrong, 7 time Tour de France winner, was a nap advocate.
Accuracy and perception
The Loughborough University’s Sleep Research has proved has higlighted the risks of driving while sleepy and are as bad as driving under the influence of alcohol. Based on the sleep research conducted in the lab, Louise Reyner recommends taking a caffeinated drink and a 15 minute nap to compound effects.
Weight loss
Power naps have essentially two effects on weight loss. First they reduce your sleepiness which in turns reduces craving for fat or sweet food. Second, as night sleep, they facilitate the production of growth hormone which reduces body fat.
Sleep quality
Contrary to a popular opinion, if you follow a few rules such as no napping less then four hours before night sleep, day sleep will also help you improve your noctural sleep. When lacking sleep, your body compensates by going on "overcharge", a short nap will help you stay at a better level and be more ready for sleeping at night.
